Abstract

Novel drug delivery devices (NDDD) using polymers for better utilization of pharmaceuticals has an enormous impact on human health-related problems. Polymers are used as medical implants, drug delivery systems, artificial tissue, and devices for gene therapy [1-3]. In view of their importance those at the Center of Excellence in Polymer Science, Karnatak University, are actively involved in NDDD research. New polymeric systems including microparticles, nanoparticles, beads, and transdermal membranes are being developed for the controlled release (CR) of drugs. Several CR systems based on polymers like cellulose derivatives viz., ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, and hydrogels of natural and semi-synthetic origin were used.
