The supply of women for gainful work in Britain

Pages 142-147 | Published online: 09 Nov 2011

Abstract

The census of population reports disclose the surprising fact that the proportion of gainfully occupied women among the total female poptilation has remained practically constant in Britain at successive census dates during the last 70 years. This seems to contradict the widely held view that the practice of going out to work is gaining considerable ground among British women.
