Fertility differentials in Detroit: 1920–1950

Pages 148-158 | Published online: 09 Nov 2011

Abstract

Differential fertility has often been studied in the United States, yet there are few reports1 of post-war patterns of differential fertility in urban populations. The present analysis of fertility rates in the City of Detroit, Michigan, attempts to describe not only the post-war pattern of differential fertility, but to trace trends in these patterns back to 1920, and to see if the past and the present yield any clues to the future.
