Alexander Webster and his “Account of the number of people in Scotland in the year 1755”

Pages 198-200 | Published online: 09 Nov 2011

Abstract

Webster's “Enumerations” must be taken to refer to approximately 1750. There are good reasons for thinking that Webster's figures possess a fairly high degree of accuracy, and, if they are accepted, it seems likely that the population of Great Britain about 1750 was in the neighbourhood of eight millions.
