Illegitimacy in England and Wales in 1911

Pages 327-331 | Published online: 08 Nov 2011

Abstract

This paper tests hypotheses put forward by Laslett concerning illegitimacy prior to wand war One. It finds, as Laslett predicts, that age on marriage is inversely related to illegitimacy and that there were substantial differences between localities in illegitimacy. In addition, however, the results also show that economic factors, in particular women's employment opportunities also exercised considerable influence on illegitimacy.
