Abstract

A daily problem for all physicians is the selection of the most effective antibiotic for the treatment of infections. In this essay, the author discusses the five antibiotics in common use today and talks about the oral versus the parenteral administration of penicillin. Other topics, such as synergism and antagonism, combined therapy and prophylactic treatment, are covered.
