Postphlebitic and Varicose Vein Stasis

Pages 494-502 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

The mechanism whereby progressive damage is produced by varicose and postphlebitic venous stasis is outlined. Incompetence of the valves in the perforating veins is of paramount importance in determining treatment. Venous stasis associated with gross incompetence of the perforators is not permanently relieved by any of the usual methods of treatment, but is controlled by applying a regulated air pressure to the lower leg. Cases are presented illustrating the effectiveness of this method of treatment.
