Abstract

Bleeding during and after the third stage of labor has become the most important cause of maternal deaths. Most of the serious cases of postpartum bleeding are the result of severe lacerations of the birth canal and the retention of placental tissue. Much can be accomplished by eliminating traumatic deliveries and by more active management of the third stage of labor.
