Abstract
Most enlargements of the thyroid gland occur in older people and are the result of involutional changes in the thyroid. These nodules are not premalignant, and unless they become large or toxic do not require any treatment.
In younger people, however, and in those who have firm discrete tumors of the thyroid or enlarging tumors of the thyroid, serious consideration should be given to the possibility of cancer. If operation is performed, it should be designed to cure cancer if present.
Some enlargements of the thyroid are due to thyroiditis, and are amenable to medical treatment.
