Abstract
Infections of the urinary tract result from bacterial invasion. Diagnosis is made by urinalysis. In the presence of a second acute attack or persistent infection, further diagnostic procedures should be carried out. The sulfonamides are probably the drugs of choice for acute infections. Although the newer antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents are highly effective in acute uncomplicated infections, they are less successful in chronic and recurrent infections. Antibiotics should not be used routinely.
