Abstract
A child with congenital heart disease has “an unusual murmur in an unusual place.” Congenital lesions may be classified as shunts and obstructive and myocardial lesions. In the presence of symptoms resulting from diminished cardiac output, pulmonary plethora and congestive heart-failure, a meticulous examination should be conducted. The authors recommend auscultation, electrocardiography and radiography to establish clinical confidence until the child's age will allow catheterization studies for maximal diagnostic accuracy. The ultimate role of surgery in these conditions is yet to be determined.
