Abstract

Continued advances in the treatment of heart disease have increased the importance of exact diagnosis of abnormal heart sounds. If auscultation of the heart is carried out under optimal external conditions, the physician should be able to distinguish between normal sounds and those of pathologic significance. The authors discuss the identification of additional heart sounds and emphasize the importance of the physician's being able to interpret these sounds.
