Secondary Malabsorption Syndromes of Intestinal Origin

&
Pages 340-351 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

Malabsorption syndromes include primary and secondary intestinal syndromes and malabsorption of gastric, pancreatic or hepatic origin.

Nontropical sprue is more common than the secondary forms and should be considered before other possible causes for the malabsorptive state.

Roentgenographic examination of gastrointestinal tract or biopsy of small intestine or mesenteric lymph nodes may help toward diagnosis.

Principal treatment includes dietary correction of deficiency states and replacement of vitamins and minerals.
