Recognition and Management of Allergy in the Preschool Child

Pages 783-788 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

Allergy was established as a cause for symptoms in 90 per cent of 182 preschool children referred to an allergy clinic. Allergic rhinitis and asthma were the most common conditions. The typical history, physical and laboratory findings are presented. Therapy should include removal of the causative agent and desensitization of the child rather than symptomatic measures. Types of medication are discussed, and the author emphasizes that steroids should be used only for major allergic crises.
