Alcoholism, a Local and National Problem

Pages 841-847 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

The problem of alcoholism encompasses all facets of human life. Factors contributing to problem drinking include social pressures, personality problems, constitutional predisposition and habituation.

In addition to expanding education programs for adults, we can protect our young people from possible future alcoholism by providing education on the effects of alcohol in our public schools. Every state has a law calling for such instruction, but few schools provide it.

Physicians should take an active part in the program to educate the public about alcoholism and attack the stigma and prejudices which still exist. Alcoholism will not be prevented until nondrinkers and nonalcoholics cooperate to help in recognition and treatment.
