Abstract
In the absence of knowledge of specific etiology or mode of pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis, predictable curative therapy or dependable preventive measures are unavailable. However, numerous empiric or semirational methods to counteract the basic disease process are in use, as well as therapeutic methods for symptomatic relief and for treatment of complications.
Symptomatic therapy remains the most important aspect of the management of patients with multiple sclerosis. As a background for whatever measures of therapy are directed toward the patient, the physician should demonstrate willingness to care for the multiple sclerosis sufferer and to preserve an optimistic attitude.
