Abstract

The evanescent nature of the elevation of serum amylase so characteristically related to acute pancreatitis places a definite limitation on our reliance on this test as a diagnostic tool. In this month's contribution, Dr. Zieve describes convincingly the advantages of the measurement of urine amylase in diagnosing acute pancreatitis.

Dr. Zieve is associate professor of medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School, and chief of the radioisotope service, Veterans Administration Hospital, Minneapolis.-Ellis S. Benson, M.D.
