Abstract
Steroids should prove beneficial in the management of patients with severe infections. However, their use is still poorly defined and further study is needed as to their administration and effects.
The effects of steroids in treatment of various infectious diseases are described and their limitations and hazards discussed.
In general, it is emphasized that when steroids are used, the duration of therapy should be restricted and, whenever possible, suitable antimicrobial drugs should be administered at the same time.
