Coccidioidomycosis: A Primer

Pages 301-310 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

The evolution of knowledge concerning coccidioidomycosis is summarized, and the geographical distribution of the disease is outlined. The life cycle of the causative organism, the natural course of the disease, and the manifestations of both the primary type and the progressive or disseminated form are presented. Gross and microscopic changes produced by the infection and various tests to aid in diagnosis are described. Indications for surgical treatment are given. Medical therapy of disseminated coccidioidomycosis has been disappointing, but amphotericin B shows some promise.
