Abstract
There are two main types of varicose veins, namely, simple saphenous varices and postphlebitic varices. Even in cases in which simple saphenous varices are extensive, the number of superficial veins that remain normal are sufficient to permit the so-called peripheral venous heart to protect the leg against the development of induration and ulcer. In decided contrast, the peripheral venous heart often cannot lower the pressure in the superficial veins in cases of postphlebitic varices.
