Elimination in the Elderly Person

, M.D.
Pages 172-175 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Various conditions may contribute to dysfunction of the bowel in the elderly person. Of great importance in maintaining satisfactory elimination is adherence to proper diet and a regular schedule of meals and intake of fluids. When constipation is prolonged or intractable, certain products may help to re-establish regular habits of elimination. Laxatives rarely, if ever, should be required to improve the health of a healthy person.
