The Diabetic Patient and Surgery

Abstract

The author describes the program of management used in the teaching hospitals of Northwestern University Medical School to provide proper amounts of insulin, fluid and electrolytes for diabetic patients undergoing surgical procedures. The program is termed the “six hour emergency diabetic management.” Sample meals and approximate glucose values of various foods are also presented.
