Diverticulitis of the Distal Colon

Twenty-Five Years' Experience

Abstract

Diverticulitis can be dangerous, and the risk increases as the disease progresses. Infection is the important element of the risk. Resection of the colon has little risk if the disease is limited to the colon and if gross suppuration has not occurred. Elective surgery can now be done with sufficient safety to warrant intervention when the patient fails to respond promptly to medical treatment. The dangerous phase of frank suppuration should be prevented if possible.
