Lipectomy: The Surgical Removal of Excess Fat

, M.D.
Pages 481-488 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Indications for surgical treatment (lipectomy) of a pendulous abdomen include the presence of ventral or umbilical hernia, restriction of physical activity, ulceration, in-tertriginous infections, and the cosmetic aspects.

The technic of lipectomy is simple; however, the operation is considered a major undertaking. Complications are not uncommon in these patients. The various operative methods differ chiefly in the planning of the skin incisions and according to whether the umbilicus is avoided, removed or transposed. Therapeutic results usually justify lipectomy, and localized adiposity does not recur after operation.
