Abstract
The most common etiologic factors found in a series of 500 cases of thrombocytopenia were disorders of bone marrow and hepatic, splenic and systemic diseases.
Idiopathic thrombocytopenia is being diagnosed less frequently as the factors involved in the development of thrombocytopenic states are better understood. Only 73 patients in this group had idiopathic thrombocytopenia.
Study of historical data, physical examination, determination of associated hematologic abnormalities, examination of bone marrow, and other laboratory studies establish evidence of pathogenetic significance in thrombocytopenia.
Appropriate therapy depends largely on the accurate determination of the etiologic factors involved.
