Abstract
The incidence of acute parotitis as a complication of surgery, particularly intraabdominal surgery, is increasing. The cause of the disease is unknown and management is often difficult.
Although dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, and decreased salivation are etiologic factors in surgical parotitis, the authors believe that over-all dehydration is the principal cause of its development.
This condition may be treated by incision and drainage or radiation therapy in addition to good oral hygiene, increased fluid intake, and administration of antibiotics. The authors recommend radiation with medical care.
