Abstract

Clear cell carcinoma, dark cell carcinoma, and urothelial or transitional cell carcinoma are the three principal types of solid renal tumor. The growth patterns are compared, and the recommended treatment is indicated. Cystic renal disease may take the form of cystic tumor, congenital multicystic kidney, polycystic disease, and congenital cystic dilatation of the renal collecting tubules; the latter is distinguished from “sponge” kidney, with which it has been confused. In children, solid renal tumors should be subjected to irradiation prior to surgical excision. Renal tumors in adults usually are not radiation-sensitive.
