Abstract
Between the ages of 5 and 20 years, viral hepatitis accounts for about 90 per cent of the jaundice seen in clinical practice; it is also the leading cause between 20 and 35 years of age, with common duct stone in second place. From 35 to 65 years, principal causes are hepatitis, cirrhosis, drugs, common duct stone, and cancer. After 65, two-fifths of the cases of jaundice are due to neoplasm, two-fifths to benign obstruction, and one-fifth to hepatocellular disease.
