Abstract
Conversion reactions do occur in men, but they are seen most often in women and girls who have a hysterical or histrionic personality.
Environmental factors are probably paramount in this condition, but genetic influences also may be partially responsible. Becoming apparent in young girls, the hysterical personality is manifested by an amazing variety of symptoms. Emotional immaturity is a constant feature.
The chronic, fixed, medically oriented patient with hysteria presents one of the most difficult therapeutic problems in medicine. Prophylactic psychotherapy offers the greatest hope.
