Abstract
Pelvic infections, changes in the clotting mechanism of the blood, and alteration in venous pressure and venous flow rate may predispose to thrombophlebitis during pregnancy and the puerperium.
Prophylaxis of thrombophlebitis includes encouraging ambulation, eliminating infection, and treating varicose veins.
Early ambulation and warm moist compresses are indicated for superficial thrombophlebitis. Anticoagulant therapy is employed in treating deep thrombophlebitis. Vein ligation is indicated in cases of septic thrombophlebitis to prevent dissemination of septic emboli to other parts of the body.
