Abstract
Tinnitus is a sensation of sound within the ear or head. In a few instances the cause may be found in abnormal blood vessels or conductive lesions of the ear. Specific therapy may relieve the symptom in these cases. In the larger group of cases the cause of tinnitus is obscure and no specific treatment is available. Reassurance is sufficient for many patients. Others find comfort in “covering” the tinnitus by an outside sound. A few patients require psychotherapy or tranquilizing drugs in order to tolerate the symptom.
