Abstract

Practical management of asthma in aged patients requires recognition of related, irreversible chronic bronchitis and emphysema. After establishing the presence of reversible bronchospasm, one must sort out the causes and determine the contributions of allergic, infectious and psychosomatic factors. Only then can effective therapy be applied, consisting principally of elimination of precipitating factors, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.
