Abstract
No single form of treatment is optimal or definitive for all patients with carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix. Cytologic studies by the Papanicolaou method are most valuable for detecting otherwise unsuspected disease and should be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any treatment. A plan of treatment is outlined which provides a graded approach to the disease. Treatment should be individualized according to the extent of the lesion, clinical response to treatment, presence or absence of other significant pelvic disease, and the state of the patient's over-all health.
