The Family Physician as a Role Player

, M.D.
Pages 159-164 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

The phenomenon of role playing or transference in the patient-physician relationship is discussed. A physician should attempt to understand the meaning of the part he plays in the patient's mind, utilizing this when it is helpful and exposing its unreality when it is harmful to the future of his relationship with the patient. On many occasions the family physician can assume a role with firmness and conviction for therapeutic purposes.
