Abstract

Although the final answer to the pathogenesis and treatment of atherosclerosis is not known, a pattern seems to be emerging from the information accumulated. In this article, the authors discuss the role of lipoprotein in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, the clinical characteristics of the disease, and the methods of treatment available. They suggest the following program for individuals in the third and fourth decades of life who are susceptible to atherosclerosis: regular exercise, minimal stress, curtailment of cigarette smoking, reduction of weight to 15 to 20 lb. below the “optimum,” and a controlled diet.
