Abstract
Methods for clinically assessing patients with bronchitis and emphysema have steadily improved during the past decade. Single breath tests of ventilatory capacity have found the most favor.
The prognosis in bronchitis and emphysema depends chiefly on the patient's age and degree of breathlessness.
The failure to find an effective method for reducing bronchial mucus handicaps successful management of chronic bronchitis. Prophylactic measures are relied on almost exclusively. In addition to these measures, patients with emphysema should be taught controlled respiration.
