Abstract

Considerable interest has been generated for the use of human diploid cell strains as a standard cell system for the production of many human virus vaccines. These strains have a broad spectrum of susceptibility to human viruses and are the only cell system presently known for the isolation and growth of many of the rhinoviruses. They retain characteristics associated with normal cells and apparently are free of latent viruses. Human diploid cell strains developed at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology have been found to have attributes which strongly recommend them as a replacement for monkey kidney in vaccine production.
