Nodular Goiter and Cancer of the Thyroid Gland

Abstract

Nodular goiter occurs in such a high percentage of the population that surgical treatment in all cases is not practical. Thus, only those patients in whom the risk of complication is greater than average are selected for surgery.

Thyroidectomy is considered a safe procedure and is associated with low morbidity and mortality.

Over-all figures indicate that cancer is present in approximately 5 per cent of nodular goiters. The type of cancer determines the correct surgical procedure. Good results can be expected in most cases.
