New Mucolytic Agents for Sputum Liquefaction

, M.D.
Pages 449-453 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

The ideal mucolytic agent would be inexpensive, stable, nonirritating and effective in liquefying mucus, purulent secretions and fibrin. Such an agent is not yet available, but one that approaches this ideal most closely so far is acetylcysteine. It effectively liquefies mucoid and purulent secretions, but not blood or fibrin. Care must be taken to assure evacuation of the liquefied secretions.
