Abstract
The unclassified mycobacteria can produce pulmonary disease which is similar clinically, roentgenologically and pathologically to true tuberculosis. The epidemiology is not clear. To date there is no evidence of transmission from one person to another. Chemotherapy is less effective than it is in true tuberculosis. Results of treatment for disease caused by Battey bacilli (group III of Runyon's classification) are poor, but group I infections can be treated successfully in a high percentage of cases, particularly if chemotherapy is combined with surgical resection or with collapse when indicated.
