Determining the Severity of Mental Disorders

A Guide to Practical Management

, M.D.
Pages 571-576 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

In treating a mentally ill patient the non-psychiatrist must consider the severity of the disorder as well as the descriptive diagnosis. Psychiatric terminology alone does not provide the clinician with sufficient information to plan effective treatment.

The author describes five criteria for determining severity of mental illness and illustrates with case reports how they can be applied to different clinical situations.
