Abstract

Amphotericin B has been used clinically with unparalleled effectiveness in treatment of almost the entire spectrum of systemic mycotic infections. It has gained wide acceptance despite difficulties in administration and a high incidence of side effects. Its efficacy has spurred efforts to find the ideal antifungal chemo-therapeutic agent. Iodides are still the first choice for chemotherapy of sporotrichosis, particularly the cutaneolymphatic form. Sulfonamides continue to be the preferred drugs for treatment of nocardiosis. Nystatin is highly effective against forms of candidiasis in which direct application is possible.
