Antihypertensive Agents Which Impair Adrenergic Neuron Transmission

Abstract

Guanethidine, methyldopa and pargyline selectively impair the function of adrenergic neurons without producing the troublesome parasympatholytic effects of ganglionic blockade. Differing significantly in hemodynamic effects, side effects and rapidity of action, these three agents offer a variety of therapeutic applications in moderate to malignant hypertension. Thiazide diuretics should also be given unless their use is contraindicated.
