Abstract

Cytologic examination of exfoliated cells from the vagina shows promise as a reliable way to assess endocrine balance in pregnancy. Chemical measurements of urinary estriol yield important information concerning placental function and fetal environment. Criteria have been established which permit recognition of fetal jeopardy. The tests can be conducted in any modern hospital.
