Abstract
The specific cause of ulcerative disease of the bowel is unknown, but many problems may soon be solved. Clinical and pathologic evidence shows that (1) toxic megacolon occurs only in chronic ulcerative colitis, (2) persistent perineal fistulization develops in granulomatous ileocolitis or terminal ileitis in the same manner as in normal persons but is initiated by a small patch of granulomatous involvement of the rectum, (3) fistulization occurs only in the perineal area in ulcerative colitis but is seen at other sites in granulomatous disease, and (4) a workable classification of diseases of the bowel is possible.
