Abstract
Information furnished by the poison control centers makes it possible to attack the problem of accidental poisoning in childhood more specifically. Education of parents in regard to potentially toxic substances should begin at the same time as immunization against the preventable infectious diseases and can be just as effective. The danger is greatest in the one to three year age group.
Medications rank first among substances causing poisoning; aspirin is the chief offender, and tranquilizers have overtaken barbiturates for second place. Stricter laws governing the labeling of potentially toxic products are not the entire answer.
