Abstract

Following the initiating factors in shock, changes within the systemic vascular system lead to circulatory failure in the terminal bed, which is accompanied by tissue hypoxia. As a consequence, the tissues develop certain sustaining factors which tend to group themselves into four major factors, all of which are either housed in the liver or bowel or develop changes mediated by some hepatic or intestinal mechanism.
