Abstract

Routine cancer screening of 14,000 patients in Seattle general hospitals uncovered one case of cancer in every 81 patients. Simple cytologic and gynecologic screening examinations which clinicians can perform routinely are outlined. The 15 minute examination requires few instruments and simple technics but can detect an over-all cancer pattern suggesting further study. Vaginal cytologic study, while a most useful tool for discovering cancer in situ, should not supplant the regular pelvic examination or the general physical examination.
