Constipation and the Laxative Drugs

A Clinical Approach

Abstract

Constipation may be divided into three categories: functional, medical and surgical. Diagnosis and treatment are discussed, and pharmacologic considerations in the use of laxatives are outlined.

Treatment of acquired megacolon in children is determined by whether or not a pathologic abnormality is present. In the absence of such abnormality, a program similar to that recommended for functional constipation in the adult is indicated.
