Abstract
The common stroke syndromes are relatively easy to recognize if the different clinical pictures are kept in mind. Anticoagulant therapy is recommended only for insufficiency of the internal carotid or basilar vertebral artery and, briefly, for occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. An important feature of management is the prevention of recurrent episodes of cerebrovascular insufficiency by correction of systemic disorders that reduce the amount of blood supplied to narrowed vessels.
